Frequently Asked Questions

frequently asked questions

  • What's the difference between a ceramic coating and a sealant or wax?

Traditional waxes and sealants are temporary and can be washed away. Optimum's Ceramic Coatings are semi-permanent and can withstand harsh chemicals offering a superior level of protection against all elements. Optimum Ceramic Coatings are like adding another clearcoat to your finish which is harder and offers better scratch resistance.

Over the years many car dealerships have tried to fool the general public offering sealants as coatings, promising superior protection but not delivering. Protekt and many other respected detailing companies from around the world offer true coatings that deliver what they promise.

  • What makes Optimum Pro Ceramic Coatings better than other coatings?

I'm glad you asked. We were very interested in knowing this as well. Here's an great explanation from one of the top dogs at Optimum:

"True coatings are characterized by their silicon content (not silicone), and 2 principal variations of silicon are used. The most common is Silicon Dioxide, sometimes marketed as glass, quartz or ceramic, and in all cases that’s true. SiO2 is suspended in a resin in the form of nano particles of Silicon Dioxide, and the resins suspend this in a film over the paint. SiO2 has a melting point of 1,600 °C (2,910 °F; 1,870 K) and on the Mohs scale of hardness is a 7.

The other coating system is Silicon Carbide or SiC. Opti-Coat Pro is the only coating available that harnesses the strengths of Silicon Carbide sometimes referred to as ceramic, industrial diamonds and carborundum. Unlike SiO2 based coatings, the SiC based coating actually bonds to the paint and the SiC is formed as a chemical reaction in that process, not by having Nano particles of the ceramic floating in a resin. SiC is superior to SiO2 coatings chemically and has a melting point of 2,730 °C (4,950 °F; 3,000 K) and is a 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Opti-Coat Pro is unique in many ways because of this fundamental difference in chemistry. Opti-Coat–Pro becomes one with the paint instead of suspending nano particles of a harder substance in a resin. This gives Opti-Coat Pro far superior chemical resistance, as the chemical must break down the SiC, and not break down a resin holding SiO2 nano particles.

Opti-Coat Pro is harder then other coatings, but no coating is scratch proof. To obtain maximum strength other coatings require heat curing, with OCP that’s not required. SiO2 coatings obtain their maximum gloss immediately, and that gloss drops off over time, Opti-Coat Pro obtains it’s maximum gloss once the polymerization process is completed (roughly 7 days). Opti-Coat Pro will maintain its gloss over time, SiO2 coatings start losing their gloss through oxidation and it continues to drop, requiring the need to add periodically some form of resin to maintain or restore the gloss and protection."

  • Why would I need Machine Paint Polishing?

Machine polishing revives the paint finish by removing or reducing scratches, swirls, buffer trails & other surface imperfections. This restores clarity and depth to the finish.

Some detailers use waxes with fillers in them that will temporarily cover up like make-up. We do our best to fix paint blemishes, not temporarily hide them.

  • Won't using a buffer leave swirls on my car?

Buffer swirls are caused by improper use of a buffer or polisher. We are experts at machine polishing which means we leave no swirls behind. Not only does improper buffing cause swirl marks but buffing too aggressively can shorten the life of your paint finish.

  • How often should I get my car detailed?

This question is somewhat subjective. We recommend you go no longer than two weeks to wash a daily driven car. As far as detailing it goes, it depends on how clean you like to keep your vehicle and when it comes to durability, it depends on the exposure to the elements and the care given between details.

    Durability is generally as follows-

Premium Paint Sealant = 4-6 months

    Optimum Paint Guard = 3 years +*

    Opti-Coat Pro Ceramic Coating = 5 years +*

    Opti-Coat Pro Plus Ceramic Coating = 7 years +*

*Optimum's Pro Ceramic Coatings are semi-permanent coatings offering the best protection on the market, however, they are still considered sacrificial layers which means they can still be scratched or damaged. In such cases they can be removed and reapplied.
